Upon his arrival in Japan, President Donald Trump’s first stop was at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, where he was welcomed by Emperor Naruhito. It was their second meeting; in 2019, Trump became the first world leader to meet the Japanese emperor after his enthronement ceremony. (Naruhito’s father, Akihito, unprecedentedly abdicated in 2019.)
Trump last visited Japan during his first presidency in June 2019, when he attended the Group of 20 summit in Osaka. He came to Japan three times during that term, when he developed a close relationship with late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
